Ice-hockey, rugby and football all have competitive social leagues in the city. Teams also tour in the region. There are mountains 1-2 hour's drive away (at non-peak hours) with hikes, and rock climbing for the more adventurous. There are a number of golf courses outside the city. Memberships are pricey but most allow non-member visitors to play. Green fees start from about RMB1,000 a round. Yes, there's skiing in Beijing's mountains, but areas are small. Snow is man-made. Good for beginners, or to practice your turns before a ski holiday. If possible, avoid weekends and public holidays as the slopes get very crowded.
